Ephesians 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
SVCC is built by God, upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
We are joined together by union with Christ, we are growing, and we are a dwelling place of God by his Spirit.

INTRODUCTION:
Review:
WHY?…
TODAY: Jesus Brings Newness (The Superior High Priest)
Opening Scripture:
Hebrews 7:26 ESV
26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
Hebrews 8:6 ESV
6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.

JESUS BRINGS NEWNESS AS OUR HIGH PRIEST AND AS THE MEDIATOR OF A NEW COVENANT.

Jesus Christ’s priesthood is better than Aaron’s:

1. Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek (vv. 7:1-10).

Genesis 14:17-20 “17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.”
Melchizedek’s (no genealogy given) is superior to Abraham as demonstrated by the giving of a blessing and a tithe.

2. Aaronic priests made nothing perfect (vv. 7:11-22).

Hebrews 7:1111 Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron?”
HEBREWS 5:6 “6 as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.””
Psalm 110:4 “4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.””
Jesus is the one qualified for the long-promised new priesthood.
Hebrews 7:19 “19 (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.”

3. Aaronic priests died (vv. 7:23-28).

Hebrews 7:2424 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever.”
Jesus lives forever and intercedes for those who draw near!
Hebrews 7:25 “25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

4. Aaronic priests served only shadows (vv. 8:1-5).

Jesus priesthood is based in the heavenly reality and not the shadow on earth.
Hebrews 8:5 “5 They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.””
*JESUS BRINGS NEWNESS AS OUR HIGH PRIEST AND AS THE MEDIATOR OF A NEW COVENANT.

Jesus mediates a better covenant:

1. The better covenant (vv. 8:6-13).

Jeremiah 31: 31 “31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,”
Hebrews 8:6 “6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.”
Hebrews 8:12 “12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.””
Jesus’ Better Covenant is the only one that offers complete forgiveness for humanity.

2. The Old Covenant’s sanctuary and sacrifices (vv. 9:1-10).

The old system allowed only for “sin of ignorance”
Hebrews 9:7 “7 but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.”
The Day of Atonement in the OT is symbolic of what Jesus does for us!
Jesus brought in “a time of reformation” with his death on the cross: Hebrews 9:10 “10 but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.”

3. The New Covenant’s sanctuary and sacrifices (vv. 9:11-10:18).

A Death was required! Hebrews 9:16 “16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established.”
Jesus provided a better sacrifice! Hebrews 9:23 “23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.”
Jesus death covers us all! Hebrews 9:28 “28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
Hebrews 10:12-13 “12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.”
Conclusion/Reflection:
JESUS BRINGS NEWNESS AS OUR HIGH PRIEST AND AS THE MEDIATOR OF A NEW COVENANT.
The New Covenant that Jesus brought us:
The Spirit testifies to us the truth of the Covenant. Hebrews 10:15 “15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,”
The laws of the Covenant are now internalized. Hebrews 10:16 “16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,””
Sins are completely forgotten. Hebrews 10:17 “17 then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.””
